PM Oli has resigned on the second day of nation-wide protests against corruption and widespread grievances triggered by the social media restrictions. These protests, led by ‘Gen-Z’, were met with deadly state-led brutality costing at least 19 lives on September 8.
We mourn the victims and wish a swift recovery to the hundreds injured. We demand justice: the full chain of command responsible for unlawful violence must be investigated and prosecuted. We also call for independent, time-bound inquiries into corruption and abuse of power across the political class over past decades.
As individuals and an organization committed to preserve civic engagement and democratic values, we urge everyone related for the following at this critical juncture:
- Stop the violence. We urge everyone to cease vandalism and arson, maintain law and order, and remain calm, so that no more lives or livelihoods are lost.
- Protect democracy. Swiftly establish, through constitutional means, a broad, time-bound governing arrangement and set a clear path to fresh, credible elections at the earliest. Any proposal to form a government from outside the current parliamentary representation must be a last resort. It should be pursued within constitutional ethos, in broad consultation, and in a manner acceptable to the Nepali people. Any agreement must include safeguards against democratic backsliding.
- Stay vigilant. Civil society and a free, independent media must remain actively vigilant, demanding transparency and regular, public reporting throughout the transition.
- Ensure accountability and rights. Regardless of its composition, any government must be fully accountable to the people, ensure robust checks and balances and independent oversight, and uphold the fundamental rights of every Nepali.
